Webster's Dictionary defines a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) as "a state-certified professional accountant." Each state in the United States has its own accountancy law. In Michigan, you must be a college graduate, with an accounting degree. You must have passed a test of your accounting knowledge and you must have worked for another CPA at least two years before you can be licensed as a CPA.
